Bouncers guard the main entrance and smoking area and will abrasively ask for your ID no matter how many times you've gone in and out bouncing between Therapy and Industry. Industry is dark, dank, and somewhat smoky even though there's no smoking allowed. Industry: Industry is Therapy's across-the-street rival, and aside from the booze they sell, they are total opposites. The Hangar is located at 115 Christopher Street, (212) 627-2044 The bar area can be a little tight but as you walk to the back of the venue, it opens up for some breathing room. Their bartenders make a wicked strong drink and on weekends you can find go-go boys who will take their whole ass out for the right amount of money. The Hangar: For the most ethnically mixed crowd that I've seen at a gay bar, The Hangar takes the cake. They make one of the best bar burgers in NYC, their drinks are cheap, and they have a nice amount of seating in the back of the venue away from the crowds up front.

It's a bit of a dive bar with an older crowd, although youngsters do trickle in on varied evenings. Julius': Deemed New York's oldest gay bar, as well as Greenwich Village's oldest bar, Julius' is another haunt that has it figured out. G Lounge is located at 225 West 19th Street, (212) 929-1085 Happy Hour: Yes (you might have to remind the bartender though!) My friend Gary suggested that they're closing down and just riding out the lease. The bartenders are there to make money and aren't very friendly, sadly, with the exception of Achilles. The DJ is absent some of the time and occasionally you'll find go-go dancing on the bar. They have excellent drinks but at not-so-excellent prices try my favorite Rum Punch and request that it's shaken. The walls seem like they've been under construction for about two years now I'm told it's some type of "art project" that has yet to be finished. It used to be the place to go on a Friday or Saturday night but I don't know what's happening here lately. G Lounge: G Lounge was one of my first regular hot spots when I started feeling out the gay scene about 10 years ago. Gym Sportsbar is located at 167 8th Avenue, (212) 337-2439 Outdoor space: Yes - the front of the bar is a small, crowded, smoky, gated patio space. Speaking of the bathroom, it's only mildly private, so be prepared to prop your leg up against the door while using it or have a friend guard it for you if you're like me! But they've got items for the sportsman, including a pool table and those funny urinal soccer games. Contrary to the name, the overall vibe of Gym Bar is very anti-Chelsea-gym-boy-with-sculpted-eyebrows-and-a-spray-tan-and sometimes that's not such a bad thing. The bartenders are personable, the space is cozy, and their frozen drinks are powerful the others cocktails, not so much. Gym Sportsbar: Gym Sportsbar's whole thing is being a relaxed, no attitude, no BS bar and they certainly deliver. Pretentious crowd.īoxers Flatiron is located at 37 West 20th Street, (212) 255-5082 And they're not BOGO during happy hour.Ĭruisy restrooms: Yes, with no dividers between the urinals which is a pet peeve of mine.Ĭrowd: Mixed ages, mostly young. They also have a "VIP" area in the front of the bar but sometimes this space gets double booked and it can become a shit show.įrozen drinks: Yes but the drink machines aren't usually turned on right away and so they're not frozen. While Boxers has three designated GENIUS "service only" areas, they are not enforced and are sometimes ignored by the bartenders. On busy Fridays and Saturdays, be prepared to wait 10 - 15 minutes for a drink. The bartenders will spend their time telling you how "straight" they are-it doesn't matter to me if you're gay or straight as long as you're interested in getting me a drink. The bar serves brick oven pizza, wings, guacamole and fries to go along with their "sports bar" theme, regardless of the fact that no one is watching any sports on the televisions. The pool tables are also awkwardly placed-if you're not careful you'll get hit in the ass with a pool stick. There isn't lot of seating and a few of the walkways get easily crowded if you stand in them, you'll be getting banged all night (and not in a good way). Its central location on 6th avenue and 20th Street below the former Limelight helps make it a nice meeting spot for post-work drinks. Boxers NYC: With a faux boxing ring in its center that doubles as a DJ booth, this is my go-to happy hour spot during any given day of the week.
